Hezbollah, often phonetically referred to as Asbola, is a Shiite Islamist political and militant group based in Lebanon. Since its formation in the early 1980s, Hezbollah has played a central role in Middle Eastern geopolitics, balancing its identity as both a resistance movement and a political party with significant military capabilities.
Origins and Formation
Hezbollah emerged during the Lebanese Civil War in 1982 as a response to the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon. Backed initially by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hezbollah’s primary goal was to resist Israeli occupation and promote Shiite interests in Lebanon. The group’s ideology is rooted in Khomeinism, the political-religious teachings of Iran’s late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Structure and Activities
Hezbollah operates with a dual structure:
- Political Wing: Participates in Lebanon’s parliamentary and municipal elections. It holds seats in the Lebanese Parliament and has ministers in government cabinets.
- Military Wing: Known as the “Islamic Resistance,” it is a highly trained militia force involved in military operations against Israel and in regional conflicts, including the Syrian Civil War.
Hezbollah also runs a wide network of social services, including schools, hospitals, and charities, especially in Shiite-majority areas of Lebanon. This has helped it gain significant grassroots support.
Relationship with Iran and Syria
Hezbollah is often described as a proxy of Iran, receiving substantial financial, military, and political support. Iran views Hezbollah as a strategic tool to project power across the Arab world. Additionally, Syria, under the Assad regime, has also supported Hezbollah, offering logistical backing and serving as a conduit for Iranian arms shipments.
Conflict with Israel
Hezbollah’s most prominent military engagements have been with Israel:
- 1980s–2000: Engaged in guerrilla warfare leading to the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000.
- 2006 Lebanon War: A major 34-day conflict erupted after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers. The war resulted in significant casualties and destruction in Lebanon but elevated Hezbollah’s stature in the Arab world as a resistance force.
International Designation and Controversy
Hezbollah is classified as a terrorist organization by countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom, particularly for its alleged involvement in terror attacks, including the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing and the 1994 AMIA bombing in Argentina. However, some nations differentiate between its military and political wings.
Role in Regional Conflicts
In recent years, Hezbollah has expanded its reach:
- Syria: Fought alongside President Bashar al-Assad’s forces during the civil war, helping to turn the tide in favor of the Syrian regime.
- Yemen and Iraq: Alleged to be advising or supporting other Shiite militias aligned with Iranian interests.
Current Status and Challenges
Despite international sanctions and pressure, Hezbollah remains a powerful force in Lebanon and the region. However, Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, public dissatisfaction, and internal political gridlock have created new challenges for the group. Critics accuse Hezbollah of undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty and dragging the country into foreign conflicts.
